More on my crazy Tuesday… I got a call from my Assistant Photo Editor not long before I went to the tennis match where she told me that she would no longer be able to make it to the softball game and we had to have that for the weeks paper. So I hurried to the tennis match to get some shots then left and went straight to the softball game sometime during the 3rd inning. I stuck around there until about the 6th inning, then headed back over to the tennis match to relax and not shoot for a little bit. Read on because my day is not nearly done.

Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday… what a crazyily busy day. First off, I went to the tennis match since I have enjoyed shooting it over the past month or so plus we were playing one of the best teams in Div. II so I knew there would be some great tennis played that day. I didn’t shoot as much this time around because I am quite a fan of tennis, so I leaned on my camera for a while and just watched. Sometimes it is nice to just watch and not try to capture that perfect moment. But keep reading to see how the day got crazier…

Last Saturday, Feb. 24, the GCSU Men’s and Women’s Tennis teams hosted Limestone at the Centeniel Center Courts. The #21 Men’s team shutout Limestone 9-0 and currently they are 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt Conference. The #9 Lady Bobcats had an equal showing with a 9-0 shutout and have a solid 9-0 overall and 5-0 Peach Belt Conference record.

Yesterday, I shot the last GC&SU men’s and women’s home basketball games. The Lady Bobcats had a close vistory, 67-61, over Columbus State wednesday night which give them a solid possession of 2nd place in the conference. Althought the Men’s team had a close game as well, Columbus State just played too well for the Bobcats with a final score of 87-81. The Thundercats were up to their usual heckling of the away team, mostly taunting them for fouls and freethrows during the first half of the game.

It was a very cold Friday evening, one which managed to send me look for warmth quicker than usual, but our baseball team managed to have quite a game. The excellent pitching of Michael Antonini led the Bobcats to a 9-0 victory in the home opener at John Kurtz Field Friday afternoon. As you can see as well, there was some beautiful sunset light hitting the field during the 6th and 7th innings, which doesn’t happen too often with typical 1pm first pitch.

Yesterday, the Tennis team hosted #10 Lander University at the Centenniel Center Courts and I got to barrow a 400mm f/2.8 from LaCour for the week, so this was a perfect opportunity to try it out. Hope you like what you see!

Wednesday, I went to get some photos of the Bobcat Baseball team who are favored to win the conference and ranked #2 in preseason Div. II polls. Baseball has always been a challenge for me to shoot and this practice was no different. They ran a lot of hard to photograph drills and made me work to find these images. While I was there I got to meet the Telegraph’s Intern for the semester, Collin Chappelle. It is always nice to see a fellow professional since there aren’t many to come by here in Milledgeville.

On Saturday the GCSU Bobcats Basketball Team played a thrilling game with a come from behind win in the last three and a half minutes of the game. The Thundercats, the semi-official mascots are at every home game to cheer on the Bobcats and heckle the opponent’s bench. There have been no incidents as of yet but campus police is always standing by just in case the Thundercats cross the line.

I’m safely back in Georgia after an amazing five days with some of the best photographers in Southern California and some amazing aspiring professionals from around the country. I finally got to ask all the questions I have always wanted answered and got some great critiques to help me out with my photos. The entire time I tried to concentrate on finding something different and a I feel like I found it most of the time. As an added bonus to my amazing learning experience, I got the Sportsmanship Award. As Robert Hanashiro put it “this business is not just about good photos, its about the person and I always had a smile on my face and helped out a lot.” It is my hope that I made some good friends and maybe some contacts in the industry and I would recommend this workshop to anyone that wants to better their photography. I put together a short slideshow of all of my favorite images from the workshop, but not necessarily the faculty’s favorites. Check it out.*Updated music in the gallery 11/21/2006 2:18am*SSA III Favorites

Can we say GLASS REMOTE! Oh man, a big thank you to Robert Hanashiro from USA Today for setting up the glass remote and giving me the trigger for the first 5.5 min of the game. I mean geez, I love that basketball photo and I hope you do too. So as you can see I shot basketball and swimming today and had a great time. I was kinda bummed yesterday because of all my equipment problems, but today made up for it without a problem. I had a great time today and really got to learn a lot by picking the brains of all of the photographers that are here. I would love to hear comments so let me know.

Yesterday I got to shoot some cool sports. First, I started at a Big West Semi-Finals Women’s Soccer Game, which yielded a few cool photos, but the best part was that fact that Matt Brown let me barrow a camera to use as a net cam. So I got to do some remote stuff which is always fun. I didn’t get anything spectacular but I was fun to use it. The I walked across the street to shoot some AVP players in a Beach Volleyball game. I got some good action stuff, but this detail was my favorite. Finally, we drove 45 mins to U.C. Irvine for a Rugby match. This was a new experience, let me tell you. Rugby is the weirdest game I have ever seen, but it was fun to shoot and again I got some good action, but the shot of the teams hyping themselfs up was my favorite. Oh yeah and all of my equipment bad luck has hit me in the last 48 hours: the shutter blew on my Canon 1D Mark II, a barrowed Mark IIn corrputed all of my images, and then when I was on deadline my computer kept crashing. Geez, what a crazy day.

Today was long and great. Horse racing was a very popular class with only 20 spots and 40 students, they did a lottery for the spots and I got lucky and got to go today. We went to Hollywood Park for about 6 hours with Wally Skallj from the L.A. Times and had a great time shooting tons of photos. I concentrated mostly on sports features and did a little bit of actual action stuff, but I think I got some cool stuff. After we got done I was absolutely exhausted, but I had to edit all my images and turn them in. These are my favorites from the day. Talk to you soon.

My flight from Atlanta got in at about 12pm Cali time, so I am officially at the Sports Shooter Academy III! If you missed my post a few months ago about the Academy, you can read more here. I took a nice small nap thanks to my 7:45am departure time, but all is well. I just got done with an early bird digital workflow session where they went over PhotoMechanic in detail and the workshop officially kicks off at 7:30pm tonight. Below is a link to the images I am going to get the faculty to critique here before this things really gets started; well if they have time. Look for more posts soon.Pre SSA III Portfolio

Sunday was the Women’s Soccer team’s last home game of the season. We beat Thomas University 2-0. Above, Sarah Plymale beats out two defenders on the right side of the goal to set up a shot on goal. Sarah is a senior and this was her last home game so she worked very hard for a goal that, unfortunately, she didn’t get.

So I got 8 hours notice for an assignment today. An editor called me at about 8pm last night to see if could take some photos at 8am; if you know anything about me, you would know that I never see the world at this time of the day. But, it is my job, so I went at 8am this morning to a local forest to follow some mountain bikers around. We had fun and I got some good photos. The one above is my favorite. Critiques are always welcome. Thanks.

The GCSU Women’s Soccer team whooped Georiga Southwestern last sunday 4-0 in a extremely offensive game. It was a lot of fun to shoot because I got a lot of opportunities to shoot since they were in the offensize zone so much. I got some other good shots of goals as well, but I like these two images the most. Hope you like them too!

Yesterday, I took some photos of the GC&SU Swimming Club called the SwimCats. Their practice was cool, it was outside, so i had a lot of light to work with but it was also at noon, which is one of the worst times of the day to take photos because the light is very harsh. I only shot a few photos like this one with the backlight, but they are by far the most dramatic thanks to the light. Enjoy!

I didn’t have a wedding this weekend, so I was able to go to the Georgia College (white) v Montevallo women’s soccer game today. The first pic is Arielle Bryant making a solid defensive play to keep the ball on Montevallo’s half and ultimately set up a scoring chance. The second is Jamie Nevin’s (#26) shot on goal that was barely hit wide by Montevallo’s goalkeeper, Corey Gros. We lost the game 2-1, but overall we looked strong and will hopefully start getting some wins.

Brittany and I went and took pics of the Bobcat Golf team today because we had a photographer who wasn’t able to finish the assigment. We took it, had fun, and got some interesting photos of the Golf team. My favorite is the shot of Brittany because it shows how much wind there was on the course today. I can’t imagine hitting a 1 in. diameter ball 400 yards in a 15 mph wind!!! These guys are amazing!

Today was a new experience. I recently found a passion for the sport of tennis and today I got to photograph our tennis team at practice for this weeks Colonnade. This is Rodrigo Yamauti, who is a friend of mine and a damn good tennis player. I watched in awe, wondering how anyone can return those serves. Every once in a while, I had to remind myself that I had to take photos because I kept getting caught up in the action.
