So two of The Avett Brothers shows in a row was surely a great way to start off my spring break and the second night at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Ga was a show I will never forget. I have been to many show in my day and it has been a while since I have seen one with as much energy as this one. The Brothers put everything they have into their shows and this show was no slouch! Usually when I am taking photos of bands, I forget about my ears and concentrate solely on the visual aspects of the show, but this one was too hard to not hear. I kept having to remind myself to take pictures and once I had most of the angles, I sat behind the sound board with Justin and just enjoyed the show. Check out this slideshow!

Two Sundays ago, I had the pleasure of photographing Rising Appalachia’s CD Release Party at Eyedrum in Atlanta and what a party it was! It was pretty amazing; they had a juggler on a unicycle, trapeze artists, spoken word artists, lots of art on the walls, fire twirling, and lots more. It was a great night for the release of their new CD titled: Scale Down. I recommend everyone to check out this CD, it has 5 of my images in it from the recording sessions and my buddys Justin and Taylor did a great job recording it! The GCSU Jazz Band presented 1940’s Swing featuring the music of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller in Russell Auditorium on Thursday and Friday. The music was superb as usual and always makes me want for spend some endless nights in a jazz bar somewhere sometime soon. These images are from the Thursday evening show and as you can see from the band director, Dr. Todd Shiver, in the third image clapping, they put on one heck of a show. Enjoy!

Friday evening I took a little trip to Athens to get some more live images of Rising Appalachia at the Melting Point. It was a nice chill venue with plenty of different angles to choose from. Their new CD comes out on March 18th and some of my images are in the booklet, so go check it out when the time comes. On Saturday, I finally got to see Rising Appalachia live, twice!. They played two shows around Little 5 Points on Saturday evening and my roommate and I went to get a taste of the live performances as well as for me to get some images of them. Both shows were as great as I imagined and I have a new respect for their song Scale Down. Its a very powerful song and everybody needs to hear it!

Today, I went to my friends house and took some photos of this band, Rising Appalachia, he was recording. Soul Field Records is Justin Glanville and Taylor Hadaway and they can make anything sound amazing. Although their talent’s were not really needed for this band bacause they sounded awesome. Chloe, Leah, and Forest were awesome on their own and Justin and Taylor just made them sound even better. If you get an chance, google Rising Appalachia. They are very good and I can’t wait for a live show. Hope everyone is having a happy holiday!!!

Friday night, the GC&SU Concert Band played at Russell Auditorium. It was a fun show although I felt it was little short.

Today was fun. I brought Justin back to his home in Dahlonega and he has a new roommate, Taylor Hadaway. Man, I haven’t seen him in years. We were great friends in middle school, almost ten years ago! So we had a good time just talking and catching up on times. We sat on the front porch on their cabin in the foothills of the mountians and they played guitar while I just took it all in and relaxed. It was very nice, hope to do it again soon.

Corey Smith!

So last night, a good friend of mine from high school came to Milledgeville with Corey Smith, who was playing at Capital City. I hadn’t seen Justin in quite a while so I went to hang out and listen to the music and take some photos just for fun. Justin got me in for free and I hung out with him during the opening band and just caught up. I met the guitar player for Corey Smith, Jason Kenney and we chatted for a while as well as their road manager. Once they went on stage (and there was a ton of feedback for the first song because the sound at CC sucks) I headed to the stage to take some photos. There was close to 500 people there, so navigating my way around was tough, but since I met the manager earlier and I told him I would give him some photos, he let me go pretty much where I wanted on the stage to get the shots. Long story short, I shot a bunch of photos, made some great contacts with the band, had some hot freshman hit on me as much as possible and try to take me home while I was taking photos, and then the sound at Capital City just died. They had to stop playing during the middle of their last song with no encore, the show just stopped. It was terrible. So I hope to maybe be working for them some more in the future. This just goes to show you that just going to hang out and have fun can get you jobs too.

Original Date/TIme: 2:48pm Saturday, April 8, 2006This week has proven to be pretty hectic for me. Last weekend, I got the chance to photograph a great Jazz Trumpet player, Byron Stripling, during the GC&SU Jazz Band performance. Then, immediately following the concert on Friday evening, Brittany and I left for Spartanburg, SC for the Southern Short Course in News Photography. This was a great experience for the both of us. We learned about lighting and sports photography as well as listened so some of the best photojournalists speak about their most recent work. Plus this trip was very lucrative for us both as well; Brittany won a copy of Apple’s Aperture (a $500 professional photography program) and I won a copy of Soundslides (a quick and easy multimedia slideshow program that I will be using to revamp the slideshows on my main site). Finally, this week has been pretty busy school-wise and yesterday I spent some time working for LaCour in their studio putting together some wedding albums. Keep checking back often to keep up with me if you like.
