Sonny Purdue came to Milledgeville on Thursday for a small rally at the Georgia Military College. I went for a job that I got through the Knight Foundation and got what they needed then stuck around to see what it was all about and take some photos. It was a pretty cool experience and I met a really nice AJC photographer. I always like being places that major media outlets are covering because then I get to see how the pros work.

With a tattered bible in one hand and his own blend of “holy” water in the other, Micah Armstrong (top) caused GC&SU’s Christians to clash over his extreme viewpoint of the religion that dominates our school. Kia Thomas (bottom) brought up race and religion and hated what Micah had to say to her. More than 150 students showed up today for his fanatical ramblings and many did their best to prove him wrong, a feat that none would accomplish.

On tuesday night, I got to do a ride-a-long with the campus police. It was a good time to get to know the officer that i rode around with, but like I said, it was a tuesday night, so not much happened. I hung out with Tammi Pissott for about 2 hours and we pulled over one car for not having their lights on. It was an uneventful night, but not much happened in the story that goes a long with it, so it worked out.

These images aren’t technically going to be out until tomorrow’s paper, but what the heck, I’ll go ahead and post them now. The first one is from the September 11th candle light memorial service that was held on Front Campus on Monday evening. It was a very nice memorial and a somber reminder of that very tragic day. The second one is for an alcohol story about freshman and some new policies on campus. That image was very last minute. I didn’t even know I was going to take it until about five minutes before the editorial staff walked downtown to get dinner on production night (last night). So we walked in the restaurant and I asked the waitress if she minded if I took some pictures of her liquor bottles. She didn’t and I got what you see here. Hope all is well.

These are my favorites from last weeks Colonnade. The first one is of Dr. Leland (the president of the university) having a discussion with students about anything they want to talk to her about over lunch in the cafeteria. The second one was a random fluke that turned out to be pretty cool. We didn’t have a Bobcat Beat done, so I had to go and do it last minute on Wednesday night. I walked out of the building where the Colonnade office is and saw a crowd of people, ignored it and walked up to the first person I saw and asked the question of the week for the beat. After a minute I noticed those people weren’t going away, so I walked over and saw this falcon with a dead squirrel. I wasn’t brave enough to try and get the shots with a wide-angle lens, so I quickly ran back to the office to grab a telephoto, which is part of the reason it is a little blurry. It was pretty amazing; apparently the falcon just swooped down out of nowhere and killed the squirrel right on Front Campus. This falcon was huge too; he stood about 18 inches tall, with a wingspan of about 3 or 4 feet. Any critiques are always welcome.
